Premio Maguey is honored to announce its Premio Maguey Achievement: Be True by Nike to Regina Orozco, as part of the 35th Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG).

With this award we recognize a person that, with her work and dedication, has broken standards and opened new paradigms, communicating a message of openness as an emblem of a transgressive and authentic culture, and that through her art has been an icon of the Queer culture and the LGBTQ+ community.

The artistic and personal dedication of Regina Orozco have made her a fascinating woman, a controversial figure, one of the most prominent and respected women in the Mexican cultural scene.

Regina was born in a time of love and peace, of social revolutions and the gender struggle. She finished her traditional studies and also started studying opera, from the National Conservatory to the Juilliard Musical School in New York. It was doing cabaret that she met Jesusa Rodríguez, and they travelled the world for many years with operistic-cabaret shows.

Her histrionic skills earned her an Ariel by the hand of Arturo Ripstein for Profundo Carmesí. She also won several contests in the world of “Bel Canto”, first place in the Palm Beach Opera, and finalist at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

Her eight music records are a testament of her musical, expressive and playful proposal. Her artistic commitment lies in the external gaze where her voice lies, her work is also an answer and her talent has innumerable followers. With her great talent and versatility, she has dwelled between theatre, film, television, opera, popular music and cabaret.

With multiple recognitions and awards, Regia Orozco has also taken the time to engage in dialogue with groups of homosexuals, feminists, sexual workers, HIV-AIDS activists, animal advocates and environmentalists, becoming an icon for minorities.
