The Evolution of Premio Maguey
Premio Maguey remains the leading competition of its kind in Latin America, and it is a highly important section within the Guadalajara International Film Festival.
It began in 2012 with the goal of legitimize and recognize LGBT+ films from all over the world, in addition to provide a space to reach as many people as possible, while promoting diversity and acceptance.
Get rid of prejudice. Know me for who I am. “Enqueerate” is a wordplay; it speaks of getting undressed (encuerarse) and the word “Queer”. Queer, a term that means something weird, out of the ordinary. In the 70s, a lot of members of the LGBTQ community took back the word and used it as a banner for the fight for sexual freedom. One of the most popular phrases was: “We are Queer! We are here! Get used to it!”
Queer is more than an identity or a sexual preference, it is a political statement. To commit to question the gender binaries, of identity. To accept that what was taught to us was not always true. To undo and build again, to find and know yourself. It is intersectionality. “Enqueerate” means that there is no correct or incorrect way of Queer. It speaks of community and acceptance. Do not define me. Leave your prejudices away. Take them off, they weigh a lot. Enqueerate!
