FICG40 ANNOUNCES ITS OFFICIAL SELECTION FOR THE IBEROAMERICAN FICTION AND DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILM COMPETITION SECTION

The 40th edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG), to be held from June 6 to 14, announces the official selection of productions that will participate in the competitive section of Ibero-American Short Films, fiction and documentary. This category considers projects made alone or in collaboration with countries from Latin America, Spain and Portugal.

The prize for the winning Ibero-American Short Film consists of a Mayahuel statuette and $75,000.00 Mexican pesos awarded to the director.

Chucho, a young man attacked with a knife while leaving work, receives a visit from his mother, Alma, who travels from far away to take care of him. At first, their coexistence is tense, marked by the emotional distance between them, but little by little they grow closer. Alma discovers facets of her son that she did not know and faces the reality of how much he has changed since he left home. As the days pass, questions they had never asked before and truths they had both avoided emerge. Although their time together is brief, each moment allows them to rebuild their relationship and understand each other in a new way.

Alice is a documentary about taking apart what seems complex to create something simple and meaningful. The film features Alice, who co-wrote the script with the director. A surfer, skateboarder, artist and transgender woman born in Maceió, in northeastern Brazil, Alice builds her identity and finds ways to exist in a society still full of prejudice and violence.

Thirteen-year-old Barbara leaves the Venezuelan crisis behind and travels through South America in search of a better life in Chile. She remembers the night she crossed the Andean altiplano, 4,000 meters above sea level; a struggle against intense cold and exhaustion, but accompanied by a spiritual presence that wandered like the wind. This landscape between Bolivia and Chile, with its snow-capped mountains, wild alpacas, crystalline streams and desert, is one of the most dangerous migratory routes in Latin America. Barbara is very clear about one thing: never give up, no matter what.

In 1955, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara were in Mexico planning the Cuban Revolution. They were looking for transportation to get to Cuba and met an ostentatious arms dealer: my great uncle, Antonio "El Cuate" del Conde. El Cuate had a boat broken down on a mountain and Fidel asked him to fix it. Eighty-two men sailed for two weeks on a yacht designed for twelve. Their shipwreck marked the beginning of the insurrection.

The lizard in 20 (2025)

Luis, "El Lagarto" (The Lizard) is a peculiar 76-year-old man who lives trapped between an old people's home and the shadow of his past. He claims to interpret better than Jim Morrison the songs of the iconic band The Doors, among many other skills. Madness has walked by his side and has sheltered him to get through life.

MÚSICAS is a documentary that follows Leticia Gallardo, the visionary director of Viento Florido, a band composed of forty talented indigenous women from the mountainous region of Tlahuitoltepec, in southern Mexico, who play traditional wind instruments, passed down from generation to generation. The film captures the deep connection between the women, their music and the landscapes that inspire them.

In a small, modest village in the heart of the Yucatán peninsula, Virginio carries an invisible weight. The whispers of Xtabay, a mythical Mayan figure who seduces and foretells doom, echo through his days, intertwined with the legacy of his father and ancestors lost in alcoholism and despair. Surrounded by death, Virginio searches for a way to live with dignity and peace, before the voice of Xtabay claims him as well.

In Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo), one of the most violent regions in the world, a group of women arrive at Panzi hospital after having been gang raped by the guerrillas in the area, who control the mineral resources. Their psychological treatment prior to reintegration confronts them with the dilemma of accepting the babies they have given birth to as a result of the rapes, finding in the question of motherhood a way to resist.

Being a teenager in Michoacán, one of the main scenarios of the drug war, made me grow up in fear and confusion. In this short film, I try to capture the train of thought I experience every time I reflect on that time. Focusing not on how the events happened, but how they felt. Reflecting on my past so I can hopefully heal some of it.

The voices of the cliff (2025)
