The 40th edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival, through its Industry programs, announces the selection of projects for DocuLab: Documentary Lab, a program that will take place from June 9 to 11, 2025 during the 40th edition of FICG.
This program is a center for the analysis and training of Ibero-American documentary cinema, with the participation of very important figures from the world of non-fiction, filmmakers, producers, editors, programmers and post-producers, who assist in the development of the selected projects.
The selected projects are:
There Will Be Shadows (There Will Be Shadows) | Argentina
Dir. Diego Ercolano
Prod. Alberto Rodriguez
A group of actors and actresses prepare a performance installation about some of the events that took place the year before the last military dictatorship in Argentina and about the case of Coca Maggi, a university professor and dean who was kidnapped and murdered in Argentina by the fascist group Concentración Nacional Universitaria (CNU) in May 1975. While preparing the installation and rehearsing the scenes, the actors and actresses reflect on the problems of representing the past and the challenges of building collective memory.
K'allpanakuy Orcconchiskunapi (Fury in the Andes - Rage in the Andes) | Mexico, Peru, United States, Canada
Dir. Adela Goldbard
Prod. Andrea Juárez, Claudia Farfán
Socially committed, participatory and experimental film that blurs the boundaries between ethnography, documentary and fiction. It takes place in the immersive geography of the Peruvian Andes, offering a powerful exploration of indigenous struggle. Created in collaboration with inhabitants of the Quechua region of Chumbivilcas, it reinterprets and subverts historical and contemporary narratives related to social conflicts. Drawing from their own desires for emancipation, community members co-created an uncensored narrative that celebrates indigenous cultural practices, reconfigured as acts of resistance.
Matinee | Puerto Rico, United States, Dominican Republic
Gabriela Díaz Arp
Prod. Karla Claudio
The story of Matininó begins when Idaliz Villanueva decides to flee with her two daughters María and Desirée - just 6 months and 7 years old - from a violent marriage. Thirty years later, the effects of violence continue to reverberate in her family and more broadly in her home, Puerto Rico, where a state of emergency has just been declared in the wake of gender-based violence. To make sense of their family narrative and empower their community, the women of the Villanueva-Rodriguez-Ramos family come together to write and star in a fantasy film where women hold the power.
Motel by the Lake (Motel by the Lake) | Mexico
Dir. Daniel Touron de Alba
Prod. Daniel Touron de Alba
My family decided to sell the Motel on a Lake. After 25 years in Wisconsin, USA, Aunt Bibi and Uncle Oskar are about to end a life cycle. In their 70s, they feel strong enough to embark on one last journey: a return to their origins. Motel on a Lake is our farewell letter.
No Money, No Honey | Chile, Argentina, United States
Dir. Nicole Costa
Prod. Daniela Camino
La Máxima, a despondent Argentinean sex worker in New York, will embark on an emotional journey to reconcile with her turbulent past and redefine her place in the world. Delving into her own memories, she reconnects with her old friends in the trans-Latinx community and regains her passion for registration, joining a powerful movement of resistance and struggle alongside her feisty peers.
Giordano Bruno's Plaza (Giordano Bruno's Plaza) | Mexico
Dir. Juan Manuel Sepúlveda
Prod. Juan Manuel Sepúlveda
Hundreds of Haitian migrants in Mexico City, camping in the Giordano Bruno square around the statue of the heretic, are resisting pressure from neighbors and authorities who are trying to evict them.
