PORTUGAL, GUEST OF HONOR AT THE 40TH GUADALAJARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

This edition will be held from June 6 to 14, 2025.

The echoes of fado and Portuguese cinematography will arrive in Guadalajara with the presence of Portugal as Guest of Honor of the 40th edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG), to be held from June 6 to 14, 2025.

"It is a privilege to announce Portugal as Guest of Honor of the 40th edition of the Festival, which honors us and fills us with happiness and pride. I thank all the people who have made this meeting possible, the beginning of a permanent collaboration," said Guillermo Gómez Mata, President of the FICG Board of Trustees, who together with Portuguese representatives such as Luís Chaby Vaz, President of the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual de Portugal (ICA); Ana Marques, from the Portuguese Film Commission, and Vítor Pinheiro, in charge of representing the ICA in international markets and festivals, announced this presence in the context of the Berlin International Film Festival.

"For us it is a tremendous honor. We thank the Guadalajara International Film Festival for considering Portugal as Guest of Honor in such a special celebration as the 40th anniversary of such a popular and important festival in the framework of Latin American and Ibero-American cinema. It is a challenge that we take very seriously, we are very excited to show the magnificent diversity of Portuguese cinema," said Luís Chaby Vaz.

"We are very excited to receive Portugal as Guest of Honor for the 40th edition, which is a magnificent opportunity to get closer to its contemporary and historical film production, its industry and its creators," said Estrella Araiza, General Director of FICG, from Guadalajara, and said that the 40th edition will be a memorable one.

The Portuguese delegation will participate in FICG with a curatorship that will include a contemporary and heritage sample of its cinematography, in addition to having a presence in the Festival's Industry programs such as the Co-Production Meeting, Pitch GDL, Episode 0, FICGames and the Portugal-LATAM Producers Meeting within the framework of the Guadalajara Film Market.

Portuguese cinema, renowned for portraying the human condition with sensitivity and authenticity, has left its mark on world cinema with masterpieces such as those of Manoel de Oliveira and the contemporary visions of directors such as Miguel Gomes, João Canijo, Pedro Costa and João Pedro Rodrigues. It is also a benchmark in international co-production.

This is how FICG, one of the main showcases for the appreciation, dissemination, promotion and distribution of Mexican and Latin American cinema, will celebrate four decades of existence, continuing its work and passion for strengthening cultural ties through cinematographic art.
